STRIKE FOR A KINGDOM: In Review
A revolutionary crime novel
This month’s Classic Read takes us back to the 1920’s and the time that followed after the general strike. A time that, despite 100 years distance, tackles problems relevant and rife with our modern hardship. Strike for a Kingdom by Menna Gaille is a small book that packs a big, revolutionary punch.
Set in the valleys in a fictional town called Cilhendre, we start the book with a riotous carnival and a shocking murder. The death of the local colliery manager casts suspicion on everyone in the village, many of whom rejoice in the man’s demise. A second body is also discovered—that of a stillborn baby—and Local JP DJ Williams is tasked with uncovering the truth and seeking out justice in a community who feels justice may have already been served.
Menna Gaille’s writing thrusts the reader in a bombastic and turbulent town. The carnival especially is vivid, witty and wild. This book is immersive and vibrant, as well as exploring cultural tensions. Strike for a Kingdom is also one of the first Welsh crime novels published and delivers on a proper historical whodunnit that will delight fans of crime fiction.
Reading this book, I couldn’t help but think – who would play DJ in an adaptation? This book would make an excellent TV series. A quick and lively read – this would be a good start for newcomers to the Welsh Women’s Classics series.
